Session 1.3
Proactive, Process-driven Digital Project Delivery – A Contractors approach to Improving Outcomes
Synopsis:
An effective approach to digital delivery should be aimed at driving efficiency throughout the lifecycle of a project.
The use of in-house digital design capability/resources by a contractor allows the proactive control of the process throughout design finalisation and construction, increasing certainty in design and reducing variations throughout the duration of the projects.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understanding your client’s digital requirements to de-risk a project.
2. Effectively procuring consultant and subcontractor teams to effectively deliver digital outcomes for a project.
3. Proactive management of the coordination process – incorporating coordination/clash management with progressive buildability reviews to achieve a coordinated design.
Body:
Projects are increasingly citing digital requirements as a component of project delivery. With the additional resources required by contractors to achieve this, the question must be raised – how can digital project delivery be utilised to maximise efficiencies?
An effective approach to digital delivery should be aimed at driving efficiency throughout the lifecycle of a project, from contract award to design finalisation, construction and handover submissions in order to facilitate a client’s asset/facilities management activities. The use of in-house digital design capability/resources by a contractor allows the proactive control of the process throughout design finalisation and construction, increasing certainty in design and reducing variations throughout the duration of the projects. This ultimately bolsters a contractor’s ability to deliver certainty to their client’s upon handover.
This presentation is designed to focus on RCC’s approach to managing digital deliverables on our 32 Smith St project. Our process-based approach to the direct management of consultant/subcontractor teams by RCC’s internal resources will be highlighted – and how this additional attention has led to increased certainty around the accuracy of 2D and 3D documentation, as well as certainty around the completeness and buildability of the design.
Key focus areas:
– The role of the BIM Manager on RCC projects
– Understanding your client deliverables
– Effectively procuring consultant and subcontractor teams for digital delivery
– Management of the coordination process, including implementing processes to ensure productive outcomes
– Project handover – achieving client deliverables
