Break on through (to the other side) of doors in your models

Presentation/Lecture

Synopsis:

People are strange about their families, and manufacturers certainly get a bad reputation for their bloated and overly complicated families. As Door nerds, we see a lot of examples of how Door families are used in models. Join us for this session, where we’ll light your fire, and show you the good, the bad and the ugly. We’ll also explore best practices on how to handle door schedules, naming conventions and more. We will use case studies from around the world that showcase good collaboration between architects and specification writers, architectural consultants and more, and how you can use BIM content and models to leverage the best information possible and get jamming with your models.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn how to standardize door families with consistency and schedule parameters.
2. Improve your usage of Revit by optimizing your door schedules.
3. Create a clear path on how Door marks and naming conventions are used in your organization as well as optimal workflows, which are applicable for more than just openings and door families.

Body:

Doors are the bane of every architect’s existence. We know that something that should be so simple, is ridiculously complex. That’s why this session will help you break on through to the other side of doors in your models. Learn how you can quickly and easily save time and money for your firm with some simple, practical steps – all without breakin’ a sweat.

In this presentation, we’ll take you through a demonstration of how to simplify your door schedules. We’ll take a look at best practices for door families. You’ll hear from other architects on challenges that they’ve overcome, which enabled them to save time on projects.

During this session, we’ll blend 2 topics: creation of BIM content + Collaboration based on doors:
1) Creation of BIM content:
The BIM creation of a Revit Family for Doors is a very laborious and highly complex process that requires a great deal of time and expertise. That’s why we will like to take you through the step-by step process of building and programming a parametric family for a complex door. The family can be complex, but not complicated.
This session will present a general framework, point out the 3 golden rules of properly built Revit families and cover 5 frequently asked questions about the creation of complex families in Revit, such as:
• What LOD should have?
• Hosted or Stand-Alone?
• Type or Instance Parameters?
• Should the family include shared parameters?
• Should have Energy Analysis parameters?

2) Collaboration based on doors:
Working with doors can be a considerable time investment up front, but if done correctly, you can save time and money on projects down the road. ASS ABLOY has many years of experience in developing complete door solutions in projects based on Revit Models. Here is an overview of what is important to make a successful collaboration.
• How to collaborate with external companies?
• Nested Families or not?
• Door families coming from different sources?
• Door Marks on type level or instance level?
• Doors vs Windows?
• 5 Case Studies (see below)
• …
Case Studies :
Structural Capital (Polish Construction Investor)
TM Konsult (Swedish Architect planner)
ASSAR Architects (Belgian Architect)
Zarhy & STUDIO PEZ (Israeli Architect)
Fenwick Iribarren Architects (Spanish Architect)
At the end of the session, you will feel like you’ve really taken an axe to the door and broken on through to the other side with all of the knowledge you’ve gained!
