Session 2.2
Collaborative virtual model-making: get hands-on with your designs
Synopsis:
Use immersive technologies beyond viewing and start creating models together in real-time. Design buildings, cities, or interiors with your hands, share them in meetings with several AR/VR devices, and connect the outcomes back to BIM using tools that can redefine the way we design spaces.
Learning Objectives:
1. Learn how to enhance your existing design tools with collaborative design
2. Discover how VR/AR can be used as in interactive design and authoring tool
3. Get hands-on with this technology during the session
Body:
Recent advancements in real-time rendering, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality allow us to design and present projects more interactive. This offers opportunities for a profession that spends much of its time communicating design intent, scale and user experience. Despite immersive tools having been around for +7 years, they are primarily used for viewing and validating design proposals made with flat-screen tools. Designers often dont know this technology can already be used as a more powerful way to create, communicate and engage with other designers and project stakeholders.
This session gives an overview of recent developments like wireless AR/VR headsets, hand-tracking and easy-to-maintain XR setups for your office. It will feature practical use-cases from major architecture firms that have been using this technology first hand and show the cutting edge of where these new tools are heading.
We will be joined virtually by designers that will guide us around in their projects from inside Arkio to share their experiences and tips to start introducing collaborative design to your office. The tour can be followed on-screen and even joined using your phone, tablet, laptop, or other devices. Wed like to invite the audience to join us in the Arkio metaverse to interact with our content and our virtual guests. You can ask questions and vote for content to see next or even join us live in some VR headsets for some hands-on collaboration.
We will talk about working on urban design, architecture and interior scales and show examples of bi-directional workflows with Revit, Rhino, Unity, SketchUp and BIM 360.
During this session, you will learn about the various ways this technology can be used for enhancing your existing design tools with new collaborative workflows:
-Simultaneous modeling from various devices – VR/AR/mobile/desktop
-Working with smart parametric geometry and reusable components
-Live program calculations and data input and outputs (Excel)
-Design reviews, analysis, BIM data, and issues management
-Cross-platform import and exports (Revit, Rhino, Unity)
-Other workflows (LiDAR scans, AR modeling)
Doing this live from Arkio will demonstrate how easy it is to get started and will demonstrate how real-time collaborative design can change the way designers can engage with their audience. The focus on workflows for BIM, CAD, and customization will make this session useful for both architects, designers, BIM managers, and Design Technology Leaders that want to explore the potential of design collaboration and immersive technologies.
