Session 3.1
New solutions for old problems: 5 different applications of Generative Design in the AEC industry
Synopsis:
Generative Design isn’t a new concept anymore. In the last few years, we have seen the rise of different approaches and tools. In this class, you will see several different and interesting applications of Generative Design, mainly through the usage of Dynamo and Revit. All these workflows are already possible for all of us. Come to this class to find out which one will best serve your needs.
Learning Objectives:
1. Learn how to identify a problem that can be solved through generative design
2. Learn how to set up the resolution of a design problem through the automatic generation of thousands of design options, with just Revit and Dynamo
3. Learn all the needed theoretical pieces of knowledge needed to apply it to issues where you can make the most out of generative design
Body:
Generative Design isn’t a new concept anymore. In the last few years, we have seen the rise of different approaches and the development of a variety of tools. We look at case studies and successful projects where generative techniques are implemented in several workflows. We all know that it is possible to apply generative design on a project, but the question stands: is it possible for all of us? Are all these workflows available for every user? And what is the most interesting field to apply it during a BIM process? In this class, you will learn how to apply generative design on your BIM projects, without the use of coding or expensive programs. We will guide you through both theory and practice for achieving a generative design workflow. From the theoretical side, we will guide you on how to identify what type of problems can be solved through the use of generative design. Even if it seems to be mainly a technical thing, we will show you that some activities like setting up a fitness function are mainly a design thing. From the technical side, you will explore a series of case studies and examples that will help you to identify the areas where it is possible to apply generative design. We will start from the Interior design application, then scale up to a series of applications at the building size, and end up exploring workflows at an urban scale. The examples will span across different disciplines, areas, projects, and construction phases. You will see examples coming from: Architectural Desing and Space Planning, product design and form-finding fields, People Flow and Time Management, Retail and Education spaces management, IoT and real time utilization, construction site and construction logistics management, MEP desing. For all of these examples, we will get into the most relevant details on how the process got improved through Generative Design.
