Session 3.3
Excelling at Digital Transformation: A 10 step framework for changemanagement in AEC
Synopsis:
Proper change management and leadership are essential to ensure success in the implementation any digital transformation process. Most organizations suffer when trying to introduce new systems in their teams mainly because they focus on technical aspects and forget about people and their motivations. This strategic session introduces a bespoke transformation model for the construction sector which, extending the generalist models, presents as a fable the process of defining, executing and consolidating a new digital reality.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the utility and limitations of existing change management models
2. Understand the particularities of the construction sector in terms of its digital transformation
3. Learn a framework for that transformation with clear criteria and metrics that are specific to our sector
Body:
When talking about the adoption and implementation of design, management or construction technologies, it is normal to focus on the technical and tactical aspects: which tools to acquire, for which uses and for which profiles. However, most organizations suffer or directly fail in their attempt to convert these new tools and technologies into greater welfare for their teams, a better return on their projects and greater customer satisfaction, and it is not until after a long time that professionals, teams and customers tacitly internalize and value the advantages of the technologies with which they work. It is worth asking whether professionals in the AEC sector who are responsible for leading digital transformation need a framework, a map that helps them to accelerate and offer their companies and teams the advantages of this digitalization sooner and in a controlled way. In the business strategy literature there are many examples of change management models that help clarify the processes or stages of analysis, motivation, definition, execution and consolidation. However, we believe it is necessary to bring these concepts closer to the world of construction in a way that is sensitive to the reality of our sector: atomised supply chain, project work, highly distributed knowledge, etc. In this session we present a framework and real cases for the implementation of digital technologies specific to our sector, based on the fable of a building that needs to be reformed and rehabilitated. Our model consists of ten well-defined steps with specific actions that we believe the attendee will find useful: scanning, demolition, foundations, structure, systems, envelope, occupants, execution by levels, scaffolding and as-built will serve us with a language close to our world to design and implement any introduction and adoption of new technologies in our organization. This session will be of interest to you if you are a project manager or discipline leader and need to clearly communicate the objectives and execution steps necessary to ensure the correct adoption of technologies in your team or company. Please attach any additional materials.
