Session 1.5
Anatomy of MEP Design Automation
Synopsis:
Design automation combines data, expert knowledge, and algorithms systems. This class will teach you how to decompose design problems into these three components and show different ways. We will cover simple workflow relying on expert inputs to data-rich complex multi-variable optimization and the steps in between.
Learning Objectives:
1. Learn how to organize data so it can be used efficiently by algorithms.
2. Discover methods for translating engineering knowledge into computer code.
3. Explorer a wide range of algorithmic systems and methods.
4. Apply multiple automated approaches can be applied to a single design problem.
Body:
Design automation is simply the combination of data, expert knowledge, and algorithmic systems to automate the design process. However, understanding how to connect the dots, the different ways the dots can be arranged, and the benefit of the variety of approaches requires understanding different algorithm structures. This class will decompose common MEP design problems and solve them using various algorithmic techniques. The problems covered include element distribution within spaces, zoning applications, and automated infrastructure routing. We will start simple and build up to solving complex multi-objective optimization problems. Learn the fundamental concepts shaping the future of MEP design and leave the class with the insight and skills needed to apply the proper algorithmic techniques to your design challenges.
