Synopsis:

Scan-to-BIM isn’t dead yet (thump); but if you’re willing to print your point clouds on paper, there are some interesting options for as-built documentation that don’t require accurate as-built modeling. If you’ve ever wanted to demo and phase your point clouds, this is the class for you!

Learning Objectives:

1. Easily segment your point cloud so you can turn part of it on/off in Revit using phasing and visibility controls
2. Use Revit’s existing phasing tools to control point cloud visibility in your documentation views
3. What you do/don’t need to model when you’re using the point cloud for documentation
4. Why point clouds can make for compelling documentation of as-built conditions

Body:

Scan-to-BIM is great and all, but it is time consuming and generating as-built models is a constant balancing act between accuracy and the abstractions necessary to generate documents. Yes, there are great tools to help with this process, but as tools to manage and segment point clouds get more capable and easier to use we are gaining a lot of new options to efficiently document as-built conditions accurately and quickly – without the models. In this class we’ll take a look at some new tools that short-circuit the scan-to-BIM dilemma and how you can put together documentation with the point cloud as the primary as-built documentation on paper (well, on PDF). We’ll cover how you can use these tools with Revit’s existing phasing and point cloud management tools to deliver a compelling set of documents on your next renovation project without sinking man-months into building a complete as-built model from the point cloud!
