Session 3.1
Introduction to the U.S. National BIM Program
Synopsis:
This session will introduce the U.S. National BIM Program, aimed at accelerating digital transformation of lifecycle information. It will review the current challenges and opportunities the industry faces due to lack of standardization. It will summarize strategies and the five year roadmap for improving digitization of the built environment.
Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will learn to recognize productivity inefficiencies in the built environment that stem from a lack of standardized information management.
2. Attendees will discover how the U.S. National BIM Program aims to accelerate digital transformation and transform lifecycle information management practices.
3. Attendees will gain insight into the 5-year implementation plan and roadmap for the U.S. National BIM Program.
4. Attendees will how the program workstreams aim to address stakeholder-specific interests and concerns.
Body:
The design and construction industry has yet to realize its full potential for project delivery improvements in the age of digital transformation. While the evolution of BIM technologies and VDC workflows have made significant progress in improving outcomes and performance for various organizations, the lack of industry standardization for communicating and using these technologies is a barrier to shifting the industry substantially forward on a broader scale. The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) is leading the development and dissemination of the next-generation of practice standards and processes for the built environment. The U.S. National Building Information Management Program will provide a step-change in capacity, creating a platform and community to support the next phase of digital innovation. NIBS leads a consortium of government and private sector owners and industry representatives from architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, facility and asset operations, and technology leaders to develop a standard reflecting best practices and processes. This session will identify the opportunities for improvement in the industry and highlight how the U.S. National BIM Program aims to positively impact business outcomes across the project delivery lifecycle. The U.S. National BIM Program’s Vision is “to accelerate the digital transformation of the built asset industry” and its Mission is “to transform lifecycle information management best practices”. The program will fulfill its purpose by creating and advancing next-generation building information management standards and processes that adapt, flex and scale across all project types. The targeted outcomes will improve building and infrastructure project delivery and operations, with the ultimate goal of optimizing economic, environmental, and functional performance in the U.S. built environment. We’ll outline the framework of the program, including its core values and goals, as well as the industry workgroups identified to achieve success. We’ll also explore the five-year plan for the program, purpose of the workstreams, and connection to specific stakeholder groups. Finally, we’ll share how the program addresses the primary interests and concerns of the various project stakeholders while aligning building information management activities with best practices both here in the U.S. and with the international community.
