Session 1.5
DTS: Giving Design Technology Its Due
Synopsis:
Part of the DTS Track based on the preceding 1.3 & 1.4 presentations. Discussion on design technology being a business goal rather than a means to an end.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the distinct differences between technology as a “tool” vs technology as a process.
2. Understand the duality of architecture practice and technological sophistication and application.
3. Understand what it means when we compare our industry to others.
4. Understand why comparing AECO to other industries is always an uphill battle.
Body:
Over the past 3 to 4 decades, our industry has obviously evolved technologically. The design process, however has struggled to raise technology no further than a tool. It needs to be thought of with the same fervor as sustainability, & performance. Questions like “Does this meet our sustainability goals?” are commonplace. In a matter of time the question “Does this meet our technological goals?” will pop up. Let’s discuss and make sure we are ready to answer.
