Welcome to Edinburgh!

This year Digital Built Week Europe including BILT Europe, Building Content Summit and BILT Academy will be in Scotland, home of the Scottish Bravehearts: Robert the Bruce (made famous by Chris Pine in Outlaw King), and William Wallace (Mel Gibson in Braveheart), the steam engine and Grand Theft Auto. So what can you expect in Edinburgh (apart from a brisk wind from the North Sea so wrap up well)? Here are a few sights to see from our friends in Scotland:

Edinburgh Castle
For anyone interested in History and Art, a must visit is Edinburgh Castle. within it is St Margaret’s Chapel from the early 12th century and is the oldest building in Edinburgh (since the 12th century). You can also see in the Crown Room the Honours of Scotland – the oldest Crown jewels in the British isles. Displayed alongside this is the Stone of Destiny, the ancient symbol of Scotland’s monarchy and is still used to this day during coronations in Westminster Abbey. Loch Ness and the Highlands
If you’ve got a few days up your sleeve before or after Edinburgh, a must do is to check out the Scottish Highlands! Made famous by Nessie the Loch Ness monster and the more recent TV show “Outlander” this sweeping landscape is filled with famous castles and battlegrounds. There’s a number of day tours departing from Edinburgh, or hire a car to discover for yourself!

Harry Potter
For you Harry Potter fans out there, Edinburgh is also the home of J.K. Rowling and the home of Harry Potter. Notable places include “The Elephant House” a cafe Rowling frequented while writing, Freyfriar’s Kirkyard – the famous Church and Graveyard, From which J.K. Rowling drew inspiration for many characters including the grave of Thomas Riddell from where many say Lord Voldemort is inspired as well as the gravestone of notoriously bad poet William McGonagall, from where Professor Minerva McGonagall’s name was brought. There is also the Grassmarket area and Victoria Street which is believed to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley. Even if you’re not a Harry Potter fan, this is a great place to wander around if you are visiting Edinburgh for the first time!

Whiskey Tours
Known to the locals as the “Water of Life” nothing could be more Scottish than sipping on Whiskey and there is an abundance of distilleries along the Malt Whisky Trail which is a 2 and 1/2 hour drive from Edinburgh and includes 9 distilleries including the likes of Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Glen Moray. BiLT is an event not to be missed as you will learn from some of the biggest names in the industry (and some of the new up and coming experts) sharing their knowledge and experience in a more intimate setting which allows for more discussion during the event and the social gatherings.
