Nathan has a degree in Civil and Infrastructure engineering from RMIT and has over 8 years’ experience as a Consulting Structural Engineer spending 6 years in the Building Structures team for Aurecon in Melbourne and 2 years working with BuroHappold in the UK. Throughout his engineering career Nathan has focused on the design of complex steel structures: primarily stadia and other long spanning structures. Nathan currently works with Jon Mirtschin at Geometry Gym and helps with software development, training and support of the Geometry Gym plug-in tools for structural analysis and BIM interoperability as well as providing specialist consulting in respect to Parametric Design and BIM data Workflows, Optimization and rationalization of Complex Structures and Automated Fabrication and drawing production.

Synopsis: Rhino.Inside Revit looks to tackle the long-standing interoperability problems between Rhino and Revit. Learn some of the ways in which you can utilise this new technology in everyday workflows to better link these two powerful modelling programs.Learning Objectives: 1. 3. Look at third party plug-ins using the technology to extend interoperability with external applications.Body: Is this the end of the long-standing interoperability issues between Rhino and Revit? In the world of interoperability, it is not very often something comes along which really excites, but spend a little time exploring the capabilities of Rhino.Inside Revit and you will soon be enthusiastic about the possibilities.Rhino 7 includes a new technology that allows you to work with Rhino & Grasshopper inside Revit’s environment, effectively using Rhino and Grasshopper as a plug-in for Revit. It allows you to link both platforms and avoids the common issue of needing to import or export geometry, creating an unparalleled integration between the two applications.
Interoperability between the two programs has long been an issue faced by many designers and third-party developers. By allowing access to the Revit API from directly within Rhino and Grasshopper we can start to tap into Rhinos comprehensive geometry library and grasshoppers generative design capabilities for generating quick free-form shapes, something that isn’t easily completed in Revit. We can also now use Grasshopper to drive the Revit API directly in Rhino and Grasshopper.
Typical workflow benefits that this allows is the ability to reference and directly send select geometry from Revit to Rhino and Grasshopper (whether that be for Analysis or rendering purposes) and directly create native Revit elements directly from Rhino and Grasshopper geometry. Not to mention several other automation tasks that you would typical need to understand and use Dynamo to complete until now!
Through live demonstrations, this session will introduce users to some of the main components of the Rhino.Inside Revit Technology including: Direct Import .3dm into Revit, Extracting geometry from Revit into Rhino, Generating Revit elements using Rhino and Grasshopper, Working with parameters in Revit using Grasshopper, Using the Grasshopper Player and also selecting and referencing Revit Geometry into Grasshopper to automate the generation of new Revit Elements.
We will also look at some of the third-party plug-ins which are now utilising this technology to improve the out of the box functionality of Rhino.Inside Revit to enhancing further the interoperability between these two programs and other external applications.
This session will be aimed at designers, technicians and engineers looking to streamline interoperability between Rhino and Revit typically for design or analysis purposes.
