John Mitchell

buildingSMART Australasia
Director

John has been a member of buildingSMART Australasia chapter from its foundation in 1997; our achievement has been the submission of a National BIM Implementation plan NBI (see here) to the Commonwealth government seeking increasing National adoption of BIM.
This advocacy work, with APCC, Natspec, Standards Australia and ACIF, has lead to the establishment of the Australasian BIM Advisory Board (ABAB), for which I am a member of the Technical Committee.
John has just completed, as a Research Fellow at the Collaborative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living, the development of urban scale sustainability modelling and tools based on Precinct Information Models (PIM). This work is contributing to the extension of the openBIM schema IFC to include all infrastructure types such as roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, utilities and civic space. We have prototyped two PIMs (using IFC model servers) for the Broadway Precinct (over 400 buildings) adjacent to Sydney CBD and the new Tonsley Park Development in Adelaide.
The presentation will focus on the concept of geo-referencing, ensuring dimensional consistently between map grid and ground coordinates in a BIM model, a project John has lead for buildingSmart International with a global working group.
