Reality Capture – the second coming
Synopsis:
Reality Capture technology is evolving rapidly, and the applications of this technology in the built environment are changing with it. In this session we’ll discuss several trends that are impacting what you can (and should?) do with reality capture on your projects!
Learning Objectives:
1. Sort out the good (usable) reality capture innovations from the hyperbolic marketing gimmicks.
2. Better plan future investments in reality capture technology by understanding the trends in their use in our industry
Articulate the value propositions provided by these technologies when applied to specific use-cases
Body:
For years, reality capture has been a tool primarily used for as-built modelling of existing buildings, and terrestrial (tripod mounted) full dome lidar scanners have made up a majority of our industry’s investment in this space because of the accuracy and completeness these instruments provide. But, this has been rapidly changing since we last had a BiLT to get together and talk about it… Mobile scanning, photogrammetry from video, hybrid survey/scanning instruments, drones, robot dogs, laser tracers, layout robots, and machine control on construction sites – there is so much happening right now in our industry with reality capture technologies or things enabled by this technology, that it feels impossible to keep up! In this session we will be delving into all these exciting developments over the past two years of no conferences and extracting trends and insights that will help you and your firm justify and plan investments in reality capture technologies.
