Session 3.1
Workshop: The Information Age of Construction – Data and Its Evolutionary Journey
Synopsis:
Data is the core of many industries today with rapid change an exponentially increasing factor. How is the construction industry unique with the use of data through design, construction and operations in this ever-changing environment and how must we approach the digital disruption differently to other industries?
Learning Objectives:
1. An understanding of the key factors with data management & critical path items to allow transfer and continuity of information
2. The changing environment within the construction industry (relative to other industries); what we are facing and the importance of clear strategies & change management
3. Techniques for data agility within companies and how to upskill and adapt your teams
Body:
The phase “digital disruption” is being heard more often in today’s society – but how does this relate to the Construction Industry, and more specifically the data within the construction industry? What data is available that isn’t being used; what are the road blocks; and how can we overcome them to be more effective in using digital technologies and the information that they give us access to?
This session will kick off by outlining the fundamentals of data that allows its continuity throughout the design, construction and operations phases .. across various project stages and even ownership handovers.
The session will then delve into the following:
Industry Comparison
How have other industries evolved to deal with the digital disruption; what has gone well and what hasn’t?
(Some key examples of success stories and industry statistics for stimulation)
How is the construction industry different, and what are the unique factors?
The Data Journey
How is the data journey planned out from the outset currently, how might it be improved and who needs to be involved?
(examples from major projects with some lessons learned)
Who are the key data authors at each phase in the project and how do we deal with liability and information management, e.g. “data status” and quality control
Who can benefit most from this data?
Dealing with Change
Introductory slides of change statistics etc. in todays society longevity of companies vs rate of rise.
How do other industries deal with change? (slides with real world scenarios)
What are the biggest changes that the construction industry is facing currently? (some examples of changing world factors that affect construction to stimulate)
How can organisations pre-emotively deal with this change and encourage agility within their teams? (again, trigger slides with role diversity such as coders within organisations and information fluidity between platforms using APIs)
Takeaways and Next Steps
From this session, what are some key takeaways we can agree on?
What might the next steps be, that could be targeted within:
o The Industry as a whole
o Individual construction disciplines or software vendors / partners
o Large corporations
o Small businesses
o Individuals
