Session 3.1
Fully Digitalized; Unlock the Power of BIM
Synopsis:
Learn about a new way of delivering construction information. Making BIM model the legal construction document and by that fully unlock the potential in BIM. Bringing the BIM with trust to the field, adding asbuilt value and then bringing BIM over to FM – with zero drawings! A true success story presented by showing a finished award-winning project.
Learning Objectives:
1. The result of award-winning projects that were constructed by BIM in the field
2. How to use BIM in the field and bring the field back to BIM
3. Be inspired to ditch traditional 2D-documentation and start creating value for your projects
Body:
If BIM is used in the right way both a lot of time and money can be saved thanks to a more precise and efficient building process. To completely leverage the potential of BIM, new processes need to be implemented. The real advantages of BIM are created when BIM is used in procurements, reviews, in facility management and in all other phases of the construction process. So to say, it is essential to incorporate BIM to the field to be able to help the owner to maximize the value of using BIM and hence maximize the payoff of their investment. Byggstyrning, which is a Swedish integrated project delivery firm, has helped owners to increase their payoffs through developing smarter delivery methods between the different stakeholders within the construction project. By focusing on the use of BIM in the field and what information is needed there, the team can tailormade deliverables for the right purpose instead of creating standard drawings.
This presentation will explain Byggstyrning’s way of working with BIM, how they developed their methods and how Byggstyrning implements these methods in the projects. The transformations from papers to 100% digital documentation and from PDF and drawings to IFC model files are just a few examples of how Byggstyrning uses BIM to maximize the value.
Byggstyrning developed their methods by focusing on what parts of the processes could potentially take advantage of being handled through BIM. IFC, Excel, Databases, DWG and some PDF could all be exported from BIM. By combining these different data sources, Byggstyrning was able to create one source of data and thereby avoiding that data and information from different sources were not harmonized and in conflict. In BIM all the different data, from all the different sources, can be organized and structured through coloring, highlighting properties and coding. In that way relevant data and information could be presented in an understandable and accessible way for the ones working in the field, leading to less confusion and more time spent on construction.
As a part of their method of working, Byggstyrning creates the BIM model that is to be used in the project in Cloud. This enables the participants of the project to collaborate live in the BIM model, within the cloud. The usage of the cloud minimizes the time spent on non-value-adding administration without compromising the fulfillment of legal requirements.
By the use of OpenBIM thinking through the whole project, all information can be used in other systems for facility management and future needs.
Learn about:
