Session 3.2
The BCF: Bringing Sexy Back
Synopsis:
This session will take a deep dive into what exactly the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF), the good and the bad. We will explore some of the interoperability and collaboration-based workflows that make use of BCFs in the AECO Industry.
Learning Objectives:
1. What exactly is the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) and how can we best use it?
2. What are the roles that the BCF can play in AECO workflows?
3. Why issue tracking using BCF can be so powerful and so simple at the same time
Body:
I bet that wasn’t a title you were expecting to read – let me explain. A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away…(or maybe just back in 2009) Two companies, Solibri and Tekla, got together because they knew there had to be a better way to communicate on issues. That better way? The BIM Collaboration Format, or BCF for short.
This session will take a deep dive into what exactly the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) is, why Solibri and Tekla created it, and why buildingSmart adopted it. We will explore some of the interoperability and collaboration-based workflows that make use of BCFs in the AECO Industry. We will continue by understanding how such a simple format can be so powerful when used for issue tracking workflows. We will conclude by comparing file-based and cloud-based versions of BCF transfers.
Of course, nothing is perfect, and BCF is not different so we will also look at some of the sacrifices that come along with a vendor-neutral file format. Like the possibility of having to give up some functionality in the name of interoperability.
