Session 1.2
Beyond BIM: The Emperor Has No Clothes
Synopsis:
What is the current state of digital transformation across Australia? What are the systemic errors holding back organisations? And finally, what is the end goal of this process? Grounding this discussion will be the recent AIA ‘BIM and Beyond: Design technology in architecture’ report. Next, we’ll present some of our industry case studies, highlighting systemic failings in how organisations approach technology. Finally, we’ll share a vision of the future, which we’ve coined ‘BIM 2.0’.
Learning Objectives:
1. Gain awareness of the current state of the industry
2. Identify organisational failures and possible remedies
3. Understand limitations of current BIM processes
Body:
What is the current state of digital transformation across Australia? What are the systemic errors holding back organisations? And finally, what is the end goal of this process?
This talk will unpack all of these topics in a way that departs from the conventional wisdom of ISO standards and government BIM mandates. Grounding this discussion will be the recent Australia Institute of Architects’ (AIA) ‘BIM and Beyond: Design technology in architecture’ report, which Parametric Monkey co-authored.
Next, we’ll present some of our industry case studies, highlighting systemic failings in how organisations approach technology. Using the ‘5 whys’ technique, we’ll explore the underlying cause of many of the AEC industry’s symptoms, including high staff turnover and project overruns, to name but a few.
Finally, we’ll share a vision of the future, which we’ve coined ‘BIM 2.0’, and discuss how this evolution will impact the industry.
